  1. The term backup system is in computing, a 
  2. duplicate computer system that can take over 
  3. the operation of a main computer system in 
  4. the event of equipment failure. A large 
  5. interactive system, such as an airline's 
  6. ticket-booking system, cannot be out of 
  7. action for even a few hours without causing 
  8. considerable disruption. In such cases a 
  9. complete duplicate computer system may be 
  10. provided to take over and run the system 
  11. should the main computer develop a fault or 
  12. need maintenance.
